We built a discipline-by-discipline probability model for India at Los Angeles 2028 — here's which sports the data says will deliver, and which are wishful thinking.
India won 6 medals at Paris 2024. The question for LA 2028 is whether Paris was a ceiling or a floor. Our model suggests it was a floor — but only if the infrastructure investments of 2018–2024 continue to compound.
The Medal Probability Framework
Our model uses world ranking trajectories, age curves, competition density in each discipline, and historical Olympic conversion rates (how often world-ranked athletes in each position convert to Olympic medals). It generates probability distributions for each Indian athlete and aggregates across likely team members.
India's medal probability at LA 2028 is not primarily a function of talent — it's a function of sports infrastructure investment made between 2018 and 2024.
Athletics and Shooting
Neeraj Chopra's continued presence at javelin gives India a 71% medal probability in that single event — the single highest individual medal probability in our model. Shooting remains India's broadest medal pool: we project 3–4 shooting medals at LA if the current depth of junior shooters develops on track.
Badminton and Wrestling
Badminton is India's highest-variance sport for LA. PV Sindhu's trajectory suggests a lower medal probability than Paris (she will be 33 in 2028). But the depth below her — Malvika Bansod, Anmol Kharb — gives India a non-trivial team probability if doubles events are included. Wrestling's probability depends heavily on weight category draws and whether Bajrang Punia resolves his eligibility situation.
Hockey's Structural Advantage
The men's hockey team's Paris bronze was not a fluke. The team is now world-ranked 5th and has the youngest average age of any top-10 squad. LA 2028 at sea level (no altitude disadvantage) suits India's playing style. We project a 62% playoff stage probability and a 31% medal probability — the second highest team-sport probability in our model after shooting.
LA 2028 Projection
Our central projection for LA 2028: 9–12 medals, with a floor of 6 (if attrition hits current top performers) and a ceiling of 16 (if badminton depth converts and hockey wins gold). The modal outcome is 10 medals — a meaningful step up from Paris.
