The Yadav Vote in UP: Loyalty, Fractures, and the SP's Ceiling

Constituency-level data from 2022 and 2024 reveals that MY consolidation is real — but it has a ceiling, and that ceiling is precisely the SP's problem.

The Samajwadi Party's Muslim–Yadav (MY) coalition has been the bedrock of its electoral strategy since the Mulayam Singh era. In 2022, Akhilesh Yadav's SP won 111 seats — its best since 2012 — on the back of unprecedented MY consolidation. Yet it fell 60 seats short of a majority.

MY Consolidation Data

CSDS data from 2022 shows that among Yadav voters, SP received 68% — a historic high. Among Muslims in SP-fielded constituencies, the figure was 74%. In the 80 seats where Yadav population exceeds 20% of voters, SP won 61. The coalition is real and it is consolidated.

68% Yadav vote share is a ceiling, not a floor. Breaching it would require demography that UP's arithmetic simply does not provide.

Where the Ceiling Sits

The problem: Yadavs constitute roughly 9% of UP's population. Muslims are approximately 19%. Even perfect consolidation of both communities — an arithmetical impossibility — only gives the SP roughly 28% of the vote, well below a majority threshold in a multi-party contest.

Non-Yadav OBC Leakage

The real story is the 41 non-Yadav OBC sub-castes whose votes swung decisively to BJP in 2022 after Modi's OBC outreach. In constituencies where Kurmi, Lodh, and Saini populations are significant, SP underperformed its state average by 6–11 points. Addressing this leakage is the defining challenge for 2026.

2026 Assembly Implications

For 2026, the SP's strategic question is whether to chase non-Yadav OBC consolidation — which requires a different candidate profile and issue agenda — or to deepen MY turnout through hyper-local mobilisation. The data suggests the ceiling on the second strategy is already visible. The first requires political risk the party has historically been reluctant to take.
